Featured Artist
Helen van Stolk
Helen was born in 1971 in South Africa and spent most of her school years in Johannesburg before her family moved to England in 1987. She completed her studies and started her career in England only to return to Cape Town at 21 years of age on a holiday and loved it so much she never left.
In 2009, Helen took a break from a successful but all consuming career in retail leasing to enable her to focus on her young children and to fulfill her creative desire to paint on a more full-time basis.
She started oil painting in 2005 and has been painting and learning with Edie Wilson-Smith, Lesley Charnock and Margie Johnson. She has also attended workshops with Ryno Swart, Adolfo McQue, Hazel Soan and Natalie Hirshmann. She is passionate about art and learns a lot from avidly reading up on technique and observing other successful artists work through books, dvd’s, international artist magazines and visiting galleries.
Helen joined the South African Society of Artists in 2010 and has taken part in their annual exhibitions at Kirstenbosch, winning an award in 2010 and two in 2011. She was thrilled to have jointly achieved the highest overall score ever awarded on an Annual Exhibition in 2011 and was invited to exhibit at the prestigious Merit exhibition in 2012.
Helen’s preferred medium is oil paint and she enjoys figurative work. Although she am mostly a studio painter, she is inspired by characters and scenes found in and around the beautiful city of Cape Town and on her travels.
