Derek Jacobs

Derek was born in Johannesburg in 1946. His artistic talent was evident from an early age. His first choice was to study art but his father advised that he choose a profession “where you can at least earn a living”. Architecture was then an obvious choice and Derek graduated well from UCT in 1971.

After some years work experience plus post-grad study in Urban Design, he went into practice in Cape Town, participating in many worthwhile conservation projects; most notably at the city's Victoria & Alfred Waterfront, combining his architectural skills with his passion for sailing. Derek's paintings are inspired by his enchantment with lighting effects in nature, and his enthusiasm for the environment. He lives in Simon's Town with his wife Hilary, and a 180 degree view of ever-changing False Bay.
